That will be an interesting diaper.

Hard to believe this tiny thing would ever be capable of such mischief.

Yesterday was a rough day. I don't know what got into my kids but they were definitely on Satan's path all day long. For instance, Bubby, who is normally very level-headed, decided to crumble an entire sugar cookie to pieces underneath the kitchen table after licking off the frosting. She also pooped her pants, which hasn't happened in quite some time.

But even so, Smush was much worse. Much.

It all started when I unwisely decided to go to a friend's house for craft day and bring him along. What was I thinking?! The instant I walked in, it became clear I should have got a sitter. He was a holy terror. He got into scrapbook paper. He ground his Goldfish crackers to orange dust. He even had the nerve to take a bite out of the foam craft brush I gave to him as a desperate attempt to keep him occupied.

Later, as I was frosting the aforementioned sugar cookies, I put Smush in his high chair and (in poor judgment) handed him an entire black plum to eat. Surely, that will keep him occupied, I thought. I came back a few minutes later to find he had consumed more than half the plum and swallowed the pit for good measure. Definitely. I searched the area and found no trace of it. Fortunately, Poison Control assured me that while pits do contain trace amounts of poison, one probably won't hurt him. Probably.

Then, at 10:00 PM, when I came home from a grueling 3-hour choir rehearsal, Dill delivered some bad news. You know that fishing game, the one with all the little plastic fish going around in a circle, bobbing up and down, and you have to try to "fish" them out (which is surprisingly harder than it looks)? Yeah, Dill said during clean-up, he discovered one of the plastic fish heads was missing. I reluctantly asked if Smush had possibly eaten it. He said, rather unconvincingly, that he "didn't think so."

Very reassuring.

I suppose I have an interesting diaper coming my way. Foam, plum pit and fish head. Awesome.

Truth.

I just love this video of Elder Jeffrey R. Holland testifying of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon. Such powerful words. Also, take notice of the background music -- that would be the MCO America choirs and orchestra, of which I am so fortunate to be a part. The beautiful artwork was created by Howard Lyon and inspired by the music.

I got tagged, like, forever ago.

And here it is! All the things you ever wanted to know about me. Thanks, Mandyface.

Favourite colour? (Ooh, I like the British flair there.) Um, it varies as much as my hair style does, but right now it's definitely purple. But not plum. Does that make sense?

Favourite animal? Manatee. Hands down.

There. Your daily manatee quota has been filled. You're welcome.

Favourite number? Seven. As in, 7. I was born on the 7th at 10:07 PM, 7 minutes after my twin brother. Three 7's make a jackpot. It's pretty simple.

Favourite alcoholic/non alcoholic drink? I'm kind of boring. Being Mormon means I don't drink alcohol or even coffee. I actually hate soda because I find it slightly painful to drink. What?? Yeah, really! (There's your "Jenna Is So Lame-O" factoid of the day.) When all's said and done, I usually prefer a tall, cold glass of water over anything else. Ahhh.

Facebook or Twitter? Facebook. I mean, have you read my blog? I like to talk, obvi. I don't want to be limited to 160 measly characters. You can't fence me in, TWITTER!

Your Passions?
Music. Writing. Food. The Backstreet Boys.

Your wishlist for this month? I don't even know where to begin. I'd like a new cardigan. This one will do. Mostly, my husband just needs to get a big fat raise.

Favourite pattern? I'm digging chevron as of late.

Favourite day of the week? Duh, Saturday!

Favourite flowers? Ranunculus flowers are nice. I wish I could shrink down and go to sleep on one.

Now, I'm tagging YOU! Watch out! Someone might lose an eye:

Lafingal, ACW, Mo Momma, Erratic Project Junkie and Creole Wisdom (who has a lovely chevron header on her blog). Go!

She's a baby genius.

A few months ago, Dill and I went on a date to Target (we do that sometimes) and as is customary, we casually perused the $1 Spot. You know, the section at the front that is mostly junk and dog toys but it's just SO CHEAP you can't say no? We're such Americans.

Anyway, one of the things we encountered were these flashcards of a bunch of international landmarks. Knowing how impressive Bubby's memory is,  Dill considered them a worthwhile investment. He thought it would be HILARIOUS if our 3-year-old could identify such worldwide wonders as the Taj Mahal, Mount Rushmore and Machu Picchu.

Turns out he was right: it's a total gas! See for yourself.

You can have my sexy phlegm.

Remember that episode of Friends when Phoebe got sick and discovered her new raspy, "sexy" singing voice? And then she got better, but Monica caught her cold and she said, "Give me back my sexy phlegm!" Good times.

That's kind of what's happening with me today, only it's not sexy at all. Please, TAKE IT. Take this sexy phlegm. I don't want it anymore.

I get really bad allergies this time of year -- actually, come to think of it, I never had major issues with allergies until I had kids. Now I'm like a walking sneeze factory and some breeds of grass make me break out in awful red hives like this:

Holy giraffe neck, Batman!

P.S. that was back when I had short hair, remember?

Anyway, seeing as how I am teaching three piano lessons tomorrow afternoon and have choir rehearsal on Thursday night, I am taking a vow of silence. But if you're fortunate enough to hear my "sexy" voice today, please resist the temptation to laugh.

Question of the Day: What did you do this weekend? Besides losing my voice, I went with Dill and the kids to the Mesa Swap Meet. Judging by their red faces and constant complaints of thirst, I think it's still too hot for outdoor shopping. Later, I made a chicken alfredo pizza and then watched this. Good weekend, I say.

Rolling in the deep.

If you love the song "Rolling in the Deep" by ADELE, you will love this arrangement. If you hate the song, you will still love it. WATCH!

P.S. That man playing the piano, Jon Schmidt, is one of my greatest musical inspirations. EVER. I saw him perform live when I was a sophomore in high school and his performance completely reawakened my love for the piano. A guy that plays the piano upside down, or with his toes or forearms? Doesn't get much cooler than that.

House Tour: Smush's room!

Did you finish your Halloween wreath yet? I know, Halloween's a month and 10 days away. Too early? Nah. My philosophy is you can start putting Halloween stuff up on September 1st and you'll only look slightly crazy. But you'll be having so much fun doing it!

Today, I decided to give you a glimpse into Smush's room. It's cute, I think. But I have this thing about nurseries -- I don't like them to be too design-complicated. Babies like simple things. I like simple things. So with that in mind, here we go.

I know, no window treatments?! I'm horrible.

The letters I made myself, just like I did Bubby's. Very easy to do. Just make sure you wait to buy the letters until they're half-off at Hobby Lobby, which is fairly often.

Mad props to IKEA for the artwork. It's so fun and Smush loves it.

The chenille loop rug is from Target. Target is my friend. It's that place where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came.

Let's talk about this GORGEOUS crib, shall we? The story: my in-laws purchased Bubby's crib when she was born. Family tradition! It was a beautiful convertible cherry crib, too. But it was dangerous, I guess, so it was recalled a few months before we moved to Arizona. The deal of the recall was once you sent in the bolts of the accused crib, you got a Babies R Us voucher to replace it for the same price. The voucher came back at a whopping $350 so we figured we were golden, right? Not so! This was the closest crib we could find to replace it and it was $500. So we got to shell out an additional $150 so our kid wouldn't have to sleep in a Pack 'n Play. Yeah, it's gorgeous -- and expensive, and sadly covered in teeth marks. And also, I frequently have to rescue Smush's chubby legs from between the bars. So I'm not so sure it's any safer than the original crib after all.

Anyway, the bedding is also from Target. It was super-cheap -- I want to say $40 for everything (bumper, ruffle and sheets). I liked that it was colorful but not too loud and somewhat gender neutral without being tan or green. It's just a fun, simple set and it goes with everything.

Another view. Bug lamp: IKEA. Rocking horse: gift. Chair: refinished by Dill. Blanket: knitted by Dill's grandma.

Here's the other side of the room. The changing table was from Wal-Mart -- I liked how it could serve as both a changing table AND a dresser. So practical. And cheap! The clock helped me survive the first few months of Smush's life, when I practically lived in that chair nursing him several hundred times every day. It was like $2 at IKEA. No joke.

And yes, I ghetto-fied the chair by throwing a blue blanket over it instead of recovering the pink cushions. That's just how we roll!

Sad story: See that little box on top of the changing table? It's Smush's baby box. Well, on top of it, there used to sit a glorious lamp shaped like a lemon. It was the PERFECT lamp for late-night nursing sessions. And it was so dang cute! And the icing on the cake was that I got it at Goodwill for like $2 on half-off day. Anyway, one day the lamp tipped over (it was never very stable) and the bulb burned a colossal HOLE in the side of the plastic lemon encasement. After I got over the initial shock that OUR ENTIRE HOUSE DIDN'T BURN DOWN, I threw it out. RIP Lemon Lamp.

*****CLOWN ALERT! CLOWN ALERT!*****

Hope you're not scared! This is an old musical statue of a clown (I suppose that was obvious). Dill's grandmother gave it to him when he was a baby. I love that it's sentimental, whimsical and old. Although, I do NOT love when it randomly starts tinkering in the middle of the night. That'll give you a heart attack, let me tell you!

I get crafty: Halloween wreath tutorial

Halloween is probably my favorite holiday to decorate for. (Shh, don't tell Christmas.) I just love the dramatic hues of black, purple and orange. I love the whimsy of it all. It's just good old-fashioned fun!

A few years ago, I saw a picture of a black tulle wreath online. It looked just like a little tutu and I couldn't resist bookmarking it. I decided I was definitely going to make one. But I was pregnant and sick and it never got done. Last year, I didn't have a good excuse; I was just plain lazy, I guess. But THIS YEAR! This year was going to be different. I was actually going to make the tulle wreath, even if it killed me. And I did! And it didn't even kill me.

The good news is this wreath is super-easy, super-cute and will probably only take you 30 minutes and about $5 to make. The bad news is -- well, there is none. Unless you like really challenging crafts that involve sewing, gluing and stuff like that. Then you will probably hate this craft.

Here's what you need:

Wooden cross-stitch hoop (about $1 at Hobby Lobby)
A few spools of tulle in whatever colors you want for your wreath
A yard of ribbon (for hanging)
Scissors

Ok, let's get started!

Take your tulle and cut it into 12-inch strips. If you bought a spool of tulle, that width will be perfect. If you bought tulle by the yard off a bolt (you know, wrapped around a piece of cardboard), you'll probably want your strips about 4 inches wide. That means you'll have a little extra cutting to do (Hey now, don't get all huffy with me. I told you to buy the spools). Anyway, I can't tell you how many strips to cut because I just cut them as I went along. So you should probably do the same.

Now, take one strip and fold it in half, like so:

Yep, I do crafts on the floor of my bedroom. Sad? Definitely.

Then, lay the folded-in-half strip under the hoop, like this:

Now, thread the two ends of the tulle through the loop on the other side of the hoop to form a knot. Pull it tight! You might want to orient it the other way so the ends point outward from the hoop after you make the knot. Yes, I was an idiot so you don't have to be! But it's OK if you do it incorrectly, too -- just twist it around before you pull the knot.

Repeat about a billion times. Keep smashing the tulle tufts close together on the hoop so you get a really full-looking wreath.

They're best friends!

When you're done, slap a ribbon on it and hang it up!

SOOOO CUTE, amiright?

Helpful hints and observations:

While glittery tulle is darling, it is also evil. If you choose to use glittery tulle as I did, be prepared to find purple glitter all over your entire house for the next decade.

Use good scissors. Crappy scissors don't cut through tulle easily. You might cry if you choose to use dull scissors to complete this project. Don't say I didn't warn you!

If you don't know how to tie a pretty bow, just ask Martha. She's a pro at these things.

Now, get crackin'!

We can finally go outside without being scorched.

(Purple shirt AND shoes? Call me crazy, but I happen to think you can never have too much purple in your life.)

Ah, it's a glorious day in Arizona when you open your front door and you aren't suddenly knocked flat on your back by a wall of heat. It's cooling down! Praise be!

This is my most favorite time of year. General Conference, Bubby's birthday, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, our anniversary and New Year's. No shortage of family gatherings, choir concerts, baked goods and all-out fun around here! Plus, I think the winter season is Arizona's best-kept secret. Highs in the low to mid-70's from October to April? I'll take it. The searing heat is such a small price to pay, don't you think?

As for fashion, I love to layer and it's kind of impossible during the summer months here. Unless you enjoy having heat stroke. Then be my guest. I'm looking forward to busting out my cardigans and tights! Yippee!

One last thing: remember how last week, I said I was craft-challenged? Well, after that pathetic admission, I was determined to prove I can make cute stuff, too. So, in a feverish haste, I whipped up a delightful tulle wreath for Halloween. Turns out it was easy enough that even I could handle it with minimal elevation in blood pressure. I'm going to teach you how tomorrow! Be there (here) or be square.

Question of the Day: What's your favorite thing about fall?

Saturday, September 17, 2011

How to look 10 years younger.

Step 1: Grow an enormous Moses beard.
Step 2: Shave it.
Step 3: Get the same haircut you had when you were 21.
Step 4: Put on a BYU shirt.

Holding a cute kid helps, too.

Goooooooooo Cougars! Beat them Utes!

Settle this for me.

The other day, Bubby, Smush and I were watching Yo Gabba Gabba (we loooove that show!) when Bubby said something about Plex's mouth. For those who don't know, Plex is the "magic robot" character in the show. He looks like this:

Heeeey everyone! It's dancey-dance time!

Anyway, I turned to her and said, "Plex doesn't have a mouth." But she insisted he does. She said it's the black "smile" on the silver part just below his eyes.

I'm not convinced. I thought the silver part was his neck. Who has a mouth on their NECK? That's just weird. Plus, doesn't he talk out of that speaker on his chest?

I called Dill into the room and posed the question. He said he agreed ... with Bubby. What??

So, settle it for me: Does Plex the Robot have a mouth or not?

Also, this Super Music Friends Show segment makes me happy. So it will probably make you happy, too. Therefore, watch it.

Guest Post: The Erratic Project Junkie

Hey you guuuuuys! I recently jacked up my whole left shoulder and as such, I've been seeing the chiropractor a LOT. So I've enlisted the help of my cousin Elle, who is here to enlighten us on all things crafty. I kind of suck at that sort of thing, so you won't be seeing much craftiness here unless it's in the form of guest posts. I try.

*****

A big hello to all the Mom, the Intern readers!  I’m Elle, Jenna’s cousin and author of The Erratic Project Junkie. I love projects and I always seem to have a ton of them on my “to do” list. In order to increase the number of these projects that actually get finished, I started writing about them. Nothing works better than the pressure of a deadline.

Today I'm going to tell you about a relatively easy project that I completed last year. My brother and his wife were expecting their first child and I wanted to make something cute to welcome her into the family. As my very first niece she needed something special. I had done some photo rag quilts in the past (which I blogged about here) and I had a lot of iron-on photo fabric left over. So ... I came up with the idea to make some custom onesies.

How super cute are these? If you have opposable thumbs you can totally make them.

I dragged Collin out of the house on a shopping endeavor. Now, of course when you're not looking for something you find it all over the place and when you want it, well...then it's no where to be found. That seemed to be the case with these darned onesies.  A few weeks before we had been out shopping for something and I had seen them in several different styles and colors. We head out to get some and can I find a darned thing? Of course not. I finally wound up with a more lackluster group than I previously had planned - a bunch of plain white onesies and one cute little pink one. It would have to do.

The first thing to do was to decide what designs I wanted to make. In the case of my niece, I had a total of six onesies that I could make. I knew that I wanted to make the pink one with her name on it, but no idea of what to do with the others.

So I started digging through the scrapbook room for ideas. I wound up finding some cute phrases on some of my Slice cards that would work fantastically. So...the final plans for the plain white ones were to use the phrases "Princess", "All Girl", "So Cute", and "Cute as a Button". I still had one that I was clueless on. I tend to be some what of a smart mouth, so I wanted one that was somewhat witty.

For those of you who know me, I tend to use the phrase "suck it" quite frequently. I honestly didn't realize how often until my wonderful friend Erin pointed it out to me. I say it a lot. Well...when you think of a baby, what else do you think of? A pacifier right? I figured this was a perfect combination. In fact, I was pretty freaking proud of myself for coming up with something I found so darned hilarious. (Have I mentioned that this was at about 10pm? I may have been a little bit rummy.)

I hopped on the computer to match up some pictures with my phrases. My sister-in-law loves Hello Kitty so I knew that had to be on one of them. I decided to pair the Hello Kitty iron-on with "Princess". A quick perusal of clip art and I had figured out the rest. I imported them into Publisher and added the text. I selected a cute whimsical font that I love - Sunshine Poppy. I then made the colors match the photos and created some outline to keep the letters from coming out looking flat.

(These came out slightly fuzzy since they were taken with my camera phone ... it's not fantastic.)

After that I printed the pictures and phrases out on my Quick Fuse paper. For those of you who haven't used it before, I love this stuff. It's pretty fool proof. The only trick is to make sure you print on the correct side. The smooth, shiny side is the iron on side. I bought mine at JoAnn Fabrics. I'm pretty sure most craft stores like Michael's or Hobby Lobby carry them as well. They sell for around $25 for a 10 pack. I used to be able to buy them in packs of 25, but lately I seem to only find the smaller ones. And...being the thrifty shopper that I am, I always use one of my coupons to buy them, so I generally get out of the store for around $16 after tax. Not bad. If you add in the cost of the onesie and figure that you can generally make about 2-3 per sheet, this works out to approximately $4 per onesie. Awesome.

While you're waiting for the ink on the photo to dry (the packaging says 1-2 minutes, but I'm a worry wart so I always leave them for at least 5), bust out the iron and smooth out your onesies. Trust me, it makes life a LOT easier - even if you think they look fairly wrinkle free. Don't use any starch to iron them though as this can interfere with the bonding of the Quick Fuse with the fabric. Once dry, cut out your photos and fonts. You can either do a group cutting or you can cut out each individual letter. It just depends on what look you're going for. I cut mine out individually...I just think it comes out a little cleaner and more professional looking that way.

Getting cut out.

For the centers of letters like the "A" and "G" above, use a nice sharp X-Acto knife. This is the most time consuming part of the project. But the extra time is totally worth it.

After everything is cut out you're just one step away from super cuteness. Lay each onesie out individually on your ironing board. Line up the photo and the letters on the front of the onesie like you want them to look when the project is finished. Your iron should be set on a medium high to high cotton setting. Make sure to turn off your steam function - the water vapor will wreck the bond. Coming from straight above, sit the iron down over the top of the fabric and press down for 10-15 seconds. I tend to sweep the iron for a little extra time around the edges to make sure nothing pops up. Check the fuse with your fingernail. If you get any lifting, put on a little more heat. The fabric paper is pretty tough and I haven't had any issues with scorching to date, so as long as you're reasonable you should be fine.

And that's it! You're done! The only caveat to these is the laundering. They do need to be handled somewhat gently to prevent the fuse from coming off. They do best when hand washed in cold water without detergent. Understandably somewhat tough with an infant, but do the best you can to spot treat the areas outside of the photos. You can also use a small amount of liquid fabric softener in the water if needed. This will pull out some discolorations. Allow them to dry flat or in your dryer on low heat. (I can't guarantee that there isn't a risk of damage, but I've been okay washing them in the machine on delicate and then following them up with a low heat tumble dry.)

Once my friend Kari saw them, she talked me into making some for her new niece and nephew. So I had the chance to make some boy ones as well.

I like this kind of a project for baby gifts because it just seems more personalized and thoughtful. In my case, getting the six completed for Marley took me about 4-6 hours spread out over 2 days (most of that time was taken up with the cutting - which I did while watching TV). The total cost for her gift ended up being around $20 - including the more expensive pink onesie. Not bad for six finished projects.

I hope you all enjoyed this project. Thanks again to Jenna for letting me hang out on her blog for a day. I look forward to seeing you all over at The Erratic Project Junkie!

Lady in red.

Confession: I love that super-cheesy 80's song, "Lady in Red." Always have. It's just so darned romantic! And that's one of the many reasons I could not pass up this fire engine red floor-length dress from Seesaw Vintage. I had a promo code so after everything it only ended up being $30. No brainer!

Check out the gold detailing along the scalloped sleeves. So perfect. I hope I get invited to a fun Christmas party this year!

Also: younger sister who is going to Homecoming? You are more than welcome to borrow this hot number.

Take a look at some other lovely finds in the Seesaw Vintage store. I really wanted this one but it wasn't my size.

Hope your Saturday is going well. Goooooo Cougars!

(I suppose a flaming red dress is not exactly Cougar-friendly attire, huh?)

Best friend birthday.

Wow, check out this ancient (10-year-old) picture of me and my best friend, MoniQue (it's hard to believe I ever looked like that). Today is her 25th birthday! HAAAAY! I decided to write a tribute post to her on this special occasion. You only turn a quarter of a century once!

MoniQue and I became fast friends in our 7th grade French class. The teacher sat us in alphabetical order and our maiden names happen to start with the same letter, so she sat directly in front of me. We quickly realized we had a lot in common. We were both very organized, detail-oriented, academic and, to put it nicely, easily stressed out. We were old souls. We both had curly hair that we were desperate to straighten and we liked to dance. We wrote notes to each other, choreographed dance routines, ate lunch together every day, made up code names for boys we liked and met up between classes whenever possible. We called each other our "twin," even though (as you can see) we look nothing alike and to make it even more absurd, I actually have a real twin.

Our friendship continued to grow throughout junior high. At the end of 8th grade, we finally acknowledged we would not be attending high school together due to the fact we lived rather far apart. This was really hard for me. We were practically joined at the hip. I was sure no one could fill her void. And while I did end up meeting new friends in high school, I was right -- none of them could replace Moni.

Throughout the years, we've stayed in touch, even when it was difficult. Recent events have brought us closer together than ever and it's great! I love chatting with her on the phone in the afternoons, just like old times. I've always said the mark of a true friend is one whom you can go months, even years without talking to, but when you reconnect it's like no time has been lost at all. This perfectly describes my relationship with Moni.

MoniQue has always been there for me. No matter how much distance separated us, she has been present for every major event of my life. She is like this with all her friends; she cares about whatever is important to them. I love that about her.

Here we are now:

Moni-ey, you are the best friend a girl could ask for! I hope your birthday is awesome. You've been through so much in your 25 years and you've always come out on top. You deserve the best!

~Jenna-ey

P.S.: You should all take a gander at MoniQue's blog. She's a foodie and loves social media almost as much as she loves me. Which is sayin' something.

The many faces of Dill.

Dill is home from his movie star journey to Utah. Yay!! He has told me a million amazing stories about being on a real-life motion picture set. I am so jealous. Wish I could have been part of it, but I don't exactly look Jewish, Roman or Middle Eastern, do I?

Anyway, one of the first things Dill did when he got home was get rid of that animal on his face. But not without having a little fun in the process! You don't spend three months growing a beard just to hack it off in one blow.

Here's a before shot. We'll call it "The Lumberjack."

And now, a whole collection of afters:

Yee-haw!It's NASCAR time!

This guy is definitely selling you something you don't need.

Just call me Earl.

A good magician never reveals his secret.

"Mom, I, like, totally don't want to be in this stupid frickin' picture."

And then, I had the genius idea to whip out my roundbrush and create this masterpiece:

ZOMG I'm married to Justin Bieber!!!!!!!!!!!
"Baby, baby, baby OHHHHH ... "

BELIEBER 4 EVA!!!!!!!!

Looks like this whole acting experience rubbed off on him, doesn't it?

By the way, while I was creating that bowl-tastic Biebs style, I was laughing so hard I had actual tears coming out of my eyes. Never though I'd see the day.

Putting my dance skillz to good use.

Photos taken by Brion Hopkins

This is when I bravely jumped in and did the Beyonce' at David and Rachel's wedding reception. If you still don't believe it's a killer move, check out the looks on everyone's faces. Notice one guy even felt inclined to snap a picture. Get it, gurrrl.

And in case you were wondering, Dill is having the time of his life in Utah working on the LDS production of the New Testament footage. So far, he's been a random guy in a turban and a temple guard. He got to meet the Three Wisemen, toddler Jesus and adult Jesus. He's taken lots of pictures, but he's contractually forbidden from publishing them anywhere. Maybe I'll have to do some Paint depictions so you can get an idea of how awesome he looks in costume. He's sent a few pics to me on my phone and let's just say TSA would have a field day with him if he showed up to the airport in the turban he's wearing for the production.

I kid, I kid. Hopefully, they'd play nice.

I sure miss my hubby, but I must admit it's nice to have the whole bed to myself. I've been making full use of the space, let me tell ya.

Happy Friday and happy Labor Day weekend!

Question of the Day: What's on your weekend agenda? Dill's doing another shoot today so he won't be traveling home until Sunday. I think I'll go hang out with my parents and sissies!
